Hi,
About 7 months ago, I started working and I had to make a decision on what CMS should I pick. I did some research and I researched about this so called thing most popular cms (Joomla). What I noticed was that lots of people bashed this cms but the posts where very old, like 2 years and so...
They would state that Joomla doesn't have this and that and drupal does and then I discovered that Joomla did such things, so I decided to pick this CMS (I used a little drupal as well and its very cool and flexible but for now I prefer Joomla because I am always hurried to finish up websites).
My question is. As of 2009, with Joomla v1.5.8 do you think that it has nearly everything you would like from a CMS. My opinion is yes. For instance, people state that it would be nightmare to edit the core code to modify it to your needs. But nowadays if I want to change something, its a piece of cake. Basically, I play with Joomla however I like and I am not dependent on its default functionality. If I need something, I just do it.
Also, none of my clients ever complained and whenever they saw the power of Joomla they just go nutts and they always tell me "Damn... this is so much better than our current CMS". And such clients generally would be using a custom cms which costs lots of money. We always seal the deal in the end.
One thing I hate about joomla is its UAC (User Access Control) because its very limited. Although when I require a more flexible UAC, there is also a component which seems to be very good. Its lets you create your own access levels, like drupal for instance.
So, what are your opinions. I think that at this point in time, Joomla is one of the best CMSs out there. And you? I would like to hear other's opinions in the year 2009 and not 2006 when it was still in its early stages.
Regards
I am not sure about the core but a few questions appeared just after first look at joomla admin interface:
1) Where is collateral tree: only categories and sections like in a childish php-nuke. May be this can be fixed by addons, but I suspect about if they are integrated good enough with each other. WebGUI is an all in one highly integrated system which has many good thought out objects like forum, wiki, matrix comparision etc. all very SEO friendly with url like your-site.com/forum/this-is-an-aulix-question-about-joomla-features
2) How about pages consisting of any number of objects supported by the system with any custom layout with a few clicks of mouse?
There are many other questions.
Actually I was impressed with a lot of joomla third-party addons especially authentication like OpenID (even several implementations!), etc. WebGUI is still missing them in the core unfortunately yet. But once again I am not sure about level of their integration, convenience and quality.
Thanks,
Alex, aulix.com
I dislike Joomla for two reasons - one, it's written in PHP and that means it does stupid (from a security perspective) things like requiring disk space that's writeable by the web server. Two, most of the security flaws come from the add on modules. Its very difficult to keep track of them and all the security alerts. I much prefer set it and forget type systems written in Java specifically for the security issues.
Would you please suggest a GPLed Java or preferably dotNET CMS comparable in features to Plainblack CMS. Unfortunately I could not find anything good enough though I do not like perl language (at least v5) and that is why I am thinking about using WebGUI together with mono asp.net using SSO.
